The next documentary in artist-filmmaker Margy Kinmonth’s trilogy exploring how artists depict war following Eric Ravilious – Drawn To War.

War Paint – Women At War shines a light on the trailblazing role of women war artists, on the front lines round the world, championing the female perspective on conflict through art and asking: when it's life or death, what do women see that men don't?

Artists featured include Dame Rachel Whiteread, Zhanna Kadyrova, Maggi Hambling, Assil Diab, Dame Laura Knight, Marcelle Hanselaar, Cornelia Parker, Maya Lin, Shirin Neshat and Lee Miller. An entirely female cast of contributors makes this film a unique undertaking – telling vital truths in turbulent times.

Screening in association with Dumfries Fairtrade in recognition of World Fairtrade Day. Followed by informal Q&A.

When a massive Chinese factory complex in rural Ethiopia plans an ambitious expansion to a second site, the realities of industrialisation are pulled into focus.

Made in Ethiopia takes a panoramic view, following three women involved in the project from polar perspectives: Motto, the formidable businesswoman in charge of the expansion project, factory worker Beti who has staked her future on the work opportunities the factory provides, and farmer Workinesh, whose land has been earmarked for the new industrial park.

Filmed over four years, Made in Ethiopia lifts the curtain on China’s historic but misunderstood impact on Africa, and explores contemporary Ethiopia at a moment of profound change.

Exhibition On Screen: Dawn of Impressionism: Paris 1874 (PG)

The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history – millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever.

Architecton (U)

Victor Kossakovsky’s visually stunning film takes audiences on an extraordinary journey through the material that makes up our habitat: concrete, and its ancestor stone. He raises a fundamental question: how do we inhabit the world of tomorrow?

Architecton is an epic, intimate, and poetic meditation on architecture and how the design and construction of buildings from the ancient past reveal our destruction — and offer hope for survival and a way forward. Centring on a landscape project by the Italian architect Michele De Lucchi, Kossakovsky uses the perfect circle of stones in De Lucchi’s garden to reflect on the rise and fall of civilisations, capturing breathtaking imagery, from the temple ruins of Baalbek in Lebanon, dating back to AD 60 to the recent destruction of cities in Turkey following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in early 2023.

SINCE YESTERDAY: The Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands (15) plus Q&A

We are delighted to welcome Saskia Holling of Sally Skull and director Blair Young for a post film discussion.

The McKinleys, The Ettes, Strawberry Switchblade, Sophisticated Boom Boom, Twinsets, His Latest Flame, Sunset Gun, Lungleg, Pink Kross, Sally Skull, Hello Skinny and The Hedrons. Ignored by the industry and deprived of the global success afforded to the male-dominated bands of the day, Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands is a celebration of the women and the music of yesteryear, and a rallying cry to the female talent of tomorrow. Blending personal anecdotes with a scrapbook-style audio-visual aesthetic, Since Yesterday takes us on a decade-by-decade adventure, crafting the ultimate visual mixtape.

The film takes a critical look at the barriers women have faced making music in the past, and still face today. It asks how we can inspire young women to make music, if those who do so are continuously erased from our cultural history. Written & narrated by award-nominated musician Carla J. Easton, this is a powerful global story told through a local lens.
