Notes From Sheepland (15)

This meditative, experimental Irish documentary follows the multidisciplinary artist and shepherd Orla Barry as she reflects on the influence her farming life has had on her art.

Orla Barry is a hard-working, lipstick-wearing sheep farmer in rural Wexford. She is also a visual artist, renowned for her video and sound art. She strides confidently from art seminars to the Tullamore Show, lambing in April and shearing in June, working tirelessly to make a living from eco-farming in the face of global demand for faster, cheaper meats and wools. But while tied to the demands of the ovine calendar she must make time to let her creativity flow.

Cara Holmes’s delightful feature debut is filled with wit and whimsy, with lush landscapes, surprising choral interventions, Barry’s art, and soothing images of handsome sheep. It is a joyous portrait of one artist by another and a celebration of feminism, independence, and a love of the environment.

SINCE YESTERDAY: The Untold Story of Scotland's Girl Bands (cert tbc)

We are delighted to welcome Saskia Holling of Sally Skull and director Blair Young for a post film discussion.

The McKinleys, The Ettes, Strawberry Switchblade, Sophisticated Boom Boom, Twinsets, His Latest Flame, Sunset Gun, Lungleg, Pink Kross, Sally Skull, Hello Skinny and The Hedrons. Ignored by the industry and deprived of the global success afforded to the male-dominated bands of the day, Since Yesterday: The Untold Story of Scotland’s Girl Bands is a celebration of the women and the music of yesteryear, and a rallying cry to the female talent of tomorrow. Blending personal anecdotes with a scrapbook-style audio-visual aesthetic, Since Yesterday takes us on a decade-by-decade adventure, crafting the ultimate visual mixtape.

The film takes a critical look at the barriers women have faced making music in the past, and still face today. It asks how we can inspire young women to make music, if those who do so are continuously erased from our cultural history. Written & narrated by award-nominated musician Carla J. Easton, this is a powerful global story told through a local lens.

Scottish Ballet: Starstruck - Gene Kelly's Love Letter to Ballet

Inspired by Gene Kelly’s iconic work in Hollywood, Starstruck is an immersive, theatrical experience for audiences around the world to escape with us to the glamour and grace of Paris,1960.

One of the first choreographers to bring the ‘American style’ to Europe, the legendary Gene Kelly was invited to create an original work for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1960. His jazzy, joyful Pas de Dieux was highly acclaimed at the time as ‘a breath of fresh air’ but has been rarely performed since. It has now been given a new set of wings for its life on screen.

In collaboration with Kelly’s widow, Patricia Ward Kelly, Scottish Ballet’s CEO/Artistic Director Christopher Hampson and designer Lez Brotherston (The Snow Queen, The Secret Theatre) have lovingly revived the original ballet and added a delightful new twist. You’ll be transported into the world where jazz meets ballet, and the stars align.

Combining live performance capture with cinematic filming techniques and additional elements not seen in the stage production, Starstruck is directed for screen by Oscar Sansom (Dive), in partnership with Forest of Black (The Secret Theatre).

It Ends With Us, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the story of Lily Bloom, a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business. A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship. Riverwoods (N/C 8+) in association with Nithraid (free event)

Nithraid is an annual boat race and festival. Competitors race small boats up the River Nith to Mill Green on the high tide. We are delighted to be involved in this year’s events with a free film screening at the RBC.

RIVERWOODS, narrated by Peter Capaldi, is a documentary which explores the complex relationship between Scotland’s Atlantic salmon and its natural woodlands.

Three years in the making, the feature-length Riverwoods film, produced by SBP, shines a light on the perilous state of Scotland’s salmon, and tells the compelling story of a fish that once lived in the forest. And in the soil that feeds the forest. And in the predators, scavengers and even herbivores of the forest. Scotland’s Atlantic salmon - the King of Fish - is not only the ultimate angler’s prize, but a key building block in a complex forest ecosystem.
